The SAUNA Project continues to make strides in sustainable pulping innovation. On September 2–3, 2025, the consortium gathered in Espoo, Finland, for a focused workshop on process design, sensors, and life cycle assessment (LCA).
During the workshop, participants worked on block flow diagrams, mass balances, and process flow diagrams. Collected process data was carefully reviewed, and potential emissions and waste streams were actively discussed. The team also explored the application of sensors within the biorefinery process, identifying how they can support monitoring and optimisation.

In addition, the workshop helped specify the information needed for techno-economic analysis (TEA) and LCA, ensuring that future evaluations of the SAUNA concept will be robust and reliable.
The event was a remarkable opportunity for experts from research organisations and industry to come together, exchange ideas, and co-develop solutions. The high level of engagement and motivation among the SAUNA project team demonstrated the power of collaboration in driving sustainable innovation.
The workshop underlined a simple truth: together, great things can be achieved!
