The SAUNA Project was recently featured at the AIChE – American Institute of Chemical Engineers Annual Meeting 2025 in Boston. At the event, SINTEF presented a new integrated approach for process design and assessment, combining techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA), specifically tailored for emerging bioprocesses and biorefinery concepts.

During the session “Environmentally Friendly Product and Process Development for Sustainability”, Filippo Bisotti highlighted the key challenges in developing innovative, bio-based solutions capable of competing with fossil-based benchmarks.

The presentation emphasized the value of synergistic and iterative strategies that link process design with downstream techno-economic and environmental analyses. This approach enables continuous improvement and refinement of process layouts, accelerating the development of sustainable biorefinery concepts.

Within the SAUNA project, partners will apply this integrated methodology to strengthen process design and progressively converge toward optimal solutions that balance technological feasibility, economic viability, and environmental performance.
