New beginnings, shared goals, and ambitious challenges mark the official launch of the SAUNA Project!
On June 24–25, 2025, the consortium gathered in Espoo, Finland, for the project’s Kick-Off Meeting hosted by VTT, the project coordinator. Over two productive days, partners set the foundation for the collaboration that will unfold over the next 36 months, aligning visions, defining priorities, and shaping the path ahead.

The meeting also included a visit to the VTT Bioruukki Pilot Centre, where participants had the opportunity to explore the state-of-the-art research facilities that will play a key role in supporting the project’s development. This first-hand experience offered valuable insight into the technological environment that will accompany the project during its implementation.

What is the SAUNA Project?
SAUNA — Sustainable pulping innovation achieving zero pollution through efficient wood residue feedstock utilisation — is a 36-month initiative funded by the EU Horizon programme. Its goal is to pioneer innovative and sustainable pulping processes that maximise the use of wood residues while minimising environmental impact. Through advanced research and close collaboration between European partners, SAUNA aims to contribute to a more efficient and environmentally responsible bioeconomy.
